WEEKEND OF JAN. 28 & 29

Winter keeps on churning and we keep on rolling out the skiing. This past weekend was an awesome display of tremendous competitions at both our Stevek Mogul Challenge and at icy Whiteface. The turnout for both A-  & B-Teams was exceptional and we got it done and had a lot of fun at both ECS and EQS events. Those that were not competing enjoyed some wonderful snow all over the mountain as well as some great spectating of Stevek's Mogul Challenge on World Cup.

Competitions:

First off the upcoming weekend will be another busy one with our A-Team going to Waterville Valley for the Rosemary Bowl while the B-Team goes to Killington for the Killington Classic (moguls on Saturday, Air & Slope Style Sunday). Our Allegro skiers staying at home will be treated to the use of our Stevek course and some rebuilt air bumps. The A-Team will be meeting Friday morning at 9:30 at the WV base lodge for training at Waterville Valley. Meet at the same lodge on Saturday morning (Brett & Robbie) for the first day of the Rosemary Bowl (Another Singles on Sunday).

The B-Team will be hitting Killington Saturday; this is the annual Killington Classic (email Matt Ellinger matt@ellingerdesign.com if you are interested in training on Friday — a training day is not scheduled yet so stay tuned to easternfreestyle.org for up-to-date information). All registered competitors should meet at 7:30 Saturday morning at the K1 base lodge. (they are trying to get Superstar — but are not yet decided).

Results:
This past weekend the A Squad hit Whiteface/Lake Placid hard (icy hard). Competing on the same course as the World Cup skiers did a few days earlier. Competition was on Wildfire which proved to be very difficult. Through all adversity the team had a pretty good day — Action Jackson Schunk taking his best ever place 5th in the singles and Nick Urban again getting it done with the rotations and an 8th place. Grace Baldwin wasn't fond of the course but took home a respectable 10th place.

Lots of things can be said about The Stevek event this past weekend but 3 words come to mind challenging, fun and inspiring. All the athletes skied great. The coaches are very proud of all the athletes who participated. The Allegro program was very well represented in the almost 90 skier field. If it was your first time ever… congratulations and awesome job. All the groups from the F6-M2’s ripped up a very tough course. The results were pretty sweet too. The Stratton B-Team continues to dominate the Eastern Qualifier Series.

Allegro  A team is throwing out an early ask for those of you interested in helping the program out and volunteering for our A meet — Mogulfest — coming up at Stratton on Feb 11& 12th. The comp is approaching quickly and we need your help (Both A and B parents)! This event is a lot of fun help with because watching the A athletes close up is awesome. Contact  Jillian Shaffer jillians@optonline.net to sign up to help. Just like Stevek's Mogul Challenge the event cannot happen without the support and help of parent volunteers.

For those thinking about Eastern B's at Waterville Valley in March past lodging stays have been relatively safe and comfortable  at Snowy Owl 603 236 8383, Valley Inn 603 236 8425, Black Bear 603 236 4501, Silver Fox 603 236 3699 . Farther out of town but cheaper: Days Inn 603 536 3520.  (watch and ask about hockey groups staying at any of these places)

* Alex Bologna update: Alex took a tough fall in Sunday’s event and after a talk with his Mom ….looks like he’s feeling fit enough to compete this weekend. Good Luck to Alex and nice recovery

For those who've never had your children compete before here's the easiest step by step method

Register your child/children as a competitor with USSA  then      Register your child/children for the competition itself with Eastern Freestyle

Here are the instructions:

      1.      Register with USSA:

a.      Go to http://my.ussa.org/myussa

b.      Create an account by selecting the “Register Now” button (you should register as a parent).

c.      Once the account is created select “Log In to Register for a Membership”.

d.      Information you will need to create the memberships:

                                                    i.     The club is Stratton Training Center

                                                   ii.     Sport is Freestyle

iii.     The membership to use is “Rookie” (least expensive – what we recommend for first time competitors)

e.      Once you complete this process, you should get USSA number(s).  You can look this up on the site at anytime in case you forget it.  You will need this number for the next step.

         2.      Register for the event with Eastern Freestyle (each child, each day):

b.      Click the “Events” link on the left side of the page.

c.      Look for Stevek Mogul Challenge on the list and select the blinking “Register” button

d.      Enter the USSA number(s) (or first and last name) and press lookup.

e.      Complete the registration process.

Note that each date, Saturday and Sunday are separate events. Children can register for         either or both.  Every competitor gets two runs per competition and will ski with other children  her age group (by gender).

Feel free to contact Richie Duncan (rduncan@bds.com) with any questions you have about the  event.

 BRISTOL UPDATE  from Bristol organizers

A/B Toyota Freestyle Fest, Bristol, NY ~ PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.
There are a number of changes for our event this year, all driven by the incredibly warm weather and horrible snowmaking conditions. Neither of our normal course sites has adequate coverage to build anything on. As a result (after tremendous amounts of negotiations) Bristol was extremely generous to give us their main trail (Upper Rocket). Both courses will be located on this trail. The B course will run from the very top of the mtn and the A course will start directly below the B finish area. As of this update both courses are fully built including all airs and we have been training on them. Here are a few bullets that I need to make sure everyone understands in order to make this event run smoothly.

1. Spectators - THERE IS NO FOOT ACCESS TO EITHER COURSE! There will also be no spectators allowed directly below the B course - coaches only. The area at the bottom of the B, top of the A course will be very crowded and we cannot impede skier traffic going by. There is plenty of space at the side of the B course and tons of flat space at the bottom of the A course (this area is half way up the mtn though).

2. A athletes - There will be a fenced in area for you to congregate while you wait for your run. You must keep all of your gear (especially skis) inside of that area to allow skier traffic to flow by.

3. Skier traffic - as you might be able to tell from my previous two bullets, the mountain is extremely concerned that our event will pinch off traffic to the runs below. I have assured them that there is adequate room to ski by our courses and this will not be an issue. Please help me make sure that the general public can use the remainder of the trail.

4. All athletes - at all times please keep your speed in check when you are skiing by the courses and when you are going to the bottom down Lower Rocket.

This should be an exciting event and a really cool setup having both courses set up in this manner and running simultaneously. We are very much looking forward to hosting the Eastern Freestyle community. All training and event times remain unchanged. Thanks and see you all this weekend!!! ~Johnny

Think Snow!

------------------------------------------

The Sunday River Competition is on for this weekend. And Here is the quote from the Eastern Freestyle Page about friday training:

Here's the deal for Friday Training ~

8:30am - Head coaches meet at SR Comp Center to discuss plan.

9:00 am - EVERYONE should be dressed and ready to head up to the mogul hill to prepare the first full mogul course in the East. Sunday River has made it happen in the midst of one of the worst early season starts, and we need to support them. With temperatures dropping and snowmaking only able to happen for the last couple of days, they are on a tight schedule and need help from the community.

So pack up the SUV's and get on up there so we can prep the moguls, build the jumps and chop the landings and get training open some time after lunch. Sound good? Sweet!

A big thanks to the Sunday River crew for getting this event off the ground and especially to the snowmaking crew!

Good luck to all - have a great weekend!

Coach Deb

PS If you just show up after lunch to train, well...ummm....

Week of Jan 4-8

We are just finishing quite a crazy Christmas holiday week and already look forward to another weekend of Allegro training.Yes, the past week was full of action and was quite valuable for all of us. Almost every athlete had the opportunity for some great air training and the amount of time on snow -working different ski drills and training will pay off huge as the season progresses.
Of course the 21 jump salute/torchlight parade was incredible and I thank you all for the great job. Pictures are all over the Stratton Website. Allegro graced two of the main rotating images on the homepage on Tuesday. We're representing the mountain and our team well.

A Team
As of this writing it looks like we are on for Sunday River's Mogul Maine-ia and we will have Brett and Rob Outtrim covering you for what promises to be one of the funnier events on our schedule. The only thing in question now is if we will have a course to train on Friday. I will post updates on http://strattonfreestyle.ning.com as to the status of the training day.
The next weekend we will be at Bristol if you are interested in attending you should make your reservations now .

B Team
First and foremost the Sugarbush Sugarslide is unfortunately canceled. That means our next event is Stratton's very own Stevek's Mogul Challenge on the 21st–22nd of January. This becomes a busy time for us as we have 4 straight weekends at competitions going from Stevek's to Killington to Okemo to Mt. Snow. At that point we will have the President's week vacation to train hard before State Championships on March 3rd and 4th. With the air training we had this past week and what we can accomplish in the next two weekends we should all be excited for the testing of skill and nerve that a competition brings.

If you have any questions about the B-Team competition circuit don't hesitate to contact Head Coach Matt Ellinger at matt@ellingerdesign.com

Allegro and B Team at home this weekend  With the cold weather the mountain is blowing tons of snow and with that we will hope for a World Cup opening. If that happens we will try to make it into a nice training option as quickly as possible. If the Cup doesn't open the plan is to bump up lower Slalom Glade or Spruce with a jump.

On another note, I have received a few comments about inappropriate language and jokes from some of the younger participants in various seasonal programs. This behavior will not be tolerated. Anyone using inappropriate language or telling inappropriate jokes will be given one warning. Continued behavior of this sort will result in loosing training privileges for a period of time. I ask for everyone's help in making sure we have a good environment for our young athletes to feel comfortable and grow as athletes and good people. All program participants have signed a code of conduct form and will be held accountable for breaches of the code.

 Allegro Christmas Week

The Sugarloaf A Mogul Event scheduled for Dec 30 & 31 is Canceled

Christmas week is on the way and with the looks of a Christmas Winter Storm brewing everybody who loves to ski is very excited. So much stuff on tap for Allegro in the next 10 days we are planning on a very exciting and fun filled holiday.

First off- line-up for Allegro will run at it's normal times from Saturday the 24th through New Years day excluding Christmas day when Allegro WILL NOT LINE-UP. With so many days on snow everybody should be able to accomplish a lot of growth and development. With mother nature still not playing nice it's difficult to say what trails we'll be skiing and training on, but our awesome coaches will be skiing and working on all possible terrain as it continues to open and expand.

Team Uniforms:
We have Allegro Jackets available in Adult S, M and L (the jackets cost $210) as well as Allegro Pants available in Youth L and XL as well as Adult S, M, and L (the pants cost $180). If you are interested in purchasing a Freestyle Team uniform please see Charlie Jacobson in the Ski School building or email him at: "Charles Jacobson (ST)" a title="mailto:cjacobson2@intrawest.com" href="mailto:cjacobson2@intrawest.com">cjacobson2@intrawest.com> They are wonderful Spyder jackets and pants with the full array of Stratton and Allegro insignias.

A TEAM
As of this blog our 3 A team skiers are out at Steamboat Springs, Colorado competing in the U.S. Team Selections with limited snow condition out west the course was actually very nice and challenging. Dillon Lovell with a sweet Lincoln Loop, Nick Urban and Grace Baldwin working their awesome 360's all had stand-up runs the first day of competition. That means in the international field, all 3 skiers could have a chance of making the Nor Am freestyle team. Our own Mt Hood Summer Camp coach Jay Panther took 1st place at the Steamboat event and says "HI"  to the Stratton teams.
We wish our team good luck at the Boat in their next few days of competition.

With the difficult weather, we should know by the weekend if the Sugarloaf event scheduled for Dec, 30 & 31 is on or off.

If you are planning on doing A events -we suggest you make your reservations as soon as possible. The better lodging situations at the ski areas book up early.

We congratulate our other Mt Hood Summer Camp coach and Stratton friend Eliza Outrim who placed 2nd in the first World Cup of the season in Finland last week, also  Stratton's own Brittany Loweree who placed 12th. We hope to have Brittany joining us for a few days coaching over the Christmas week.

B TEAM
This past weekend some of the B-Team headed up to Killington for the EQS Central Division season opener. We started off Saturday morning with a snowy drive up to the K1 base lodge were we found a very difficult course. Lower Skylark was both technical and treacherous with a very steep top pitch that lead into a top air that did not line up with the landing or line below it. For those who made it past that were faced with a long icy mid section. Even though conditions were against us the team figured out great individual strategies to put together some impressive results.
On Saturday the Stratton B-Team bombshells swept the top 5 and had 6 athletes in the top 10! An absolutely astonishing start to the season from some very talented young ladies. Sunday was almost as impressive. 3 in the Top-5, 5 in the Top-10. It was nearly more in with Isabel Kim just missing the top 10.
Saturday Moguls — Female
          1st. Lulu Shaffer.
2nd. Charlotte Kim
3rd. Savannah Forehand
4th. Emily Eldridge
5th Sam Johnston
8th Grace Holstein

Sunday Moguls — Female
1st   Savannah Forehand
2nd. Charlotte Kim
5th. Emily Eldridge
7th. Sam Johnston
9th. Grace Holstein

The boys had some great results with half of them finishing in the top 10 on Saturday. Sunday the boys were plagued with some spectacular crashes in otherwise strong runs. Both Alex Bologna and Harrison Schunk finished with spectacular white cloud of furry in the bottom section. Complete with gasps and winces from the crowd. Go strong boys!
Saturday Moguls — Male
5th. Harrison Schunk
8th. Saheer Mathrani

Congratulations to everybody that made the trip up to Killington. The training turned out to be as valuable as did the results. It's hard to imagine a better start to the season. Matt and Jarret had a great time with everybody. Cold toes and dead radios are distant memories, washed away by great results and fantastic weekend on the snow.

B-Team Rules and Strategy Meeting:
The B-Team will have it's second annual rules and strategy meeting on Friday the 30th at 5pm. Ann Marie and Ray Forehand have graciously opened their home to the B-Team for an opportunity to learn about some rules of our sport and some key strategies that can easily add points to a comp run. Parents and Athletes are encouraged to attend for some cocktail and social time before we open up or rule books around the fireplace. Expect the meeting (mini-party) to last about 90-120 minutes. If you have any questions contact:
Ann Marie Forehand

   Weekend of Dec. 10-11

Hello Everybody and welcome to the East.

The weather is improving for skiing but has been nearly impossible for making consistent snow and keeping it on the ground. The long story short for this weekend at Stratton is we will have one trail (North American) open. The one trail will not be able to hold groups of seasonal program skiers on it with basically a ribbon of snow down it. So all Stratton seasonal programs will not be on operating on snow.

We do want to get our momentum with Allegro going this weekend though. We are encouraging all Allegro skiers who come to Stratton to get there ski feet under them and ski in the morning on there own. Then in the afternoon for competition ski program people we will offer the Rec Center Trampolines to work on your air skills from 1-3 pm on Saturday and Sunday with our top A & B competition team coaches. We will also being doing video review of our summer training at Mt Hood and water ramping from summer sessions at Lake Placid. Again, this would be for our traveling A & B skiers only. I apologize for this situation but we cant control mother nature, so all things considered I feel this should work nicely.

For all the B skiers getting ready for the Killington event on Dec 17 & 18 the weather and event is still on but we will need to watch the situation as far as Killington running it. I will quote an email from Head Coach Deb Newson and what she says about the Killington event and I quote "Killington was able to get a bunch of snow on the mtn this past weekend, just not on the mogul trail! The plan is to see what the weather brings this week and to make the call on Friday, December 9th. If we are good to go, then we will open registration on Monday, December 12th at 6pm for in-region competitors and on Wednesday, December 14th at 6pm for all regions. Keep everything crossed! Our shovels are sharpened and we are ready to build! We just need
the white fluffy materials to get it done!"

So yes indeed, lets hope for snow and get some skiing in this weekend- get through this tough weather situation with our heads up and look to the coming snows and bumps!

Here's the list of the 2012 A & B Eastern Mogul comp events. Looks to be an awesome year, hope you can make it to a bunch of them. Please review the schedule and make arrangements soon.
